Brazil Demanding More Frozen Vegetables

Sep 18, 2006

In recent times, frozen vegetables have attracted many Brazilian consumers due to their hectic lives and high disposable income. It is supposed that the consumer figure for frozen food, including vegetables, will rise with the strengthening of economy. Sales of frozen food is less because of low number of consumers who own freezers, but a rise in expenditure by consumer could also raise the sales of microwave and freezers, thereby increasing frozen food’s demand. Frozen vegetables are also attracting the restaurant industry. Selection and retail improvement has made the frozen vegetables a prior choice to fresh varieties.

As one of the fastest growing frozen food market, Brazil has experienced a growth of 25 percent in past 5 years. In the past 3 years, frozen vegetables have shown greatest demand in the market, taking a leap of 270% in sales.

Growth has given frozen vegetables the largest share in frozen food market, in terms of sales, and 2nd largest in terms of value. In 1998, Brazil showed $560 million sales of frozen vegetables in which imports accounted for 12%. The factors that have contributed to this growth include increased purchasing power and low prices of frozen vegetables.
