The demand of natural gas is continuously increasing in Japan. The major driver is the energy sector because much of Japan's natural gas consumption occurs in the production of electricity. The growing use of natural gas for electricity generation is largely a result of Japanese policies aimed at diversification of fuel sources and to reduce air pollution, as well as the technical and economic advantages of natural gas fired power plants. This has made Japan the biggest importer of LNG in the Asia-Pacific region, says "Asia Pacific LNG Market Outlook 2020", a recent report by RNCOS.

The demand of LNG surged significantly in Japan after March 2011 when Earthquake and Tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, as it propelled the power sector's share in national gas demand. Now, Japanese utility companies are moving towards boosting gas-fired electricity generation. Thus, the demand of natural gas is expected to increase in future. Thus, Japan's demand of natural gas is further expected to increase in future. Owing to this, the country will invest more in LNG receiving terminals.

However, in an important move, Japan has recently become world's first country to successfully extract gas from a deposit of methane hydrates buried beneath the sea, posing a threat to its exporters. The country hopes to begin commercial extraction from the methane hydrate fields within five years, which could prove to be a game-changer for the global gas sector.

The report by RNCOS identifies major countries of Asia Pacific region in terms of LNG demand and supply. Each of the countries is studied thoroughly with special focus on demand and supply scenario of the country; major LNG receiving terminals/production plants; under construction and proposed LNG receiving terminals/production plants; and medium and long term receiving/supply contracts. Forecasting of LNG demand/supply for 2015 and 2020 of each country is also provided in the report. Apart from this, the report also throws light on the major industry trends and business profile of major oil and gas companies operating in the LNG sector. Overall, the report provides complete overview of the market that can help clients to frame their strategies accordingly.
