US - Going Green with Biodiesel

Oct 20, 2006

Share |
The US market for biodiesel grew by 50% from 2004 to 2005. In the first half of 2006, the demand for biodiesel was so high that even 50 existing biodiesel plants couldn’t keep up with the pace. More than 55 new plants are under construction and are anticipated to start the production between late 2006 & 2008.

Biodiesel is an environment-friendly, renewable fuel made from new and used vegetable oils and animal fats. They possess more advantages over petroleum-based fuels. But even after tax reductions for producers and consumers, biodiesel has long been limited to a niche market only. The primary reason for this is its high price.

Biodiesel fuels could significantly decrease the levels of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and small particulate matter in the atmosphere. The other advantages of the biodiesel fuel are the better performance, high fuel lubricity and high oxygen level, including an increased cetane rating. The lubricating properties have proved to increase the life & cleanliness of the diesel engines.

According to recent report “New Opportunities in US Biofuel Market (2006)” by RNCOS, biofuel reduces the pollution eminently. It reduces the nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide emissions in air and can biodegrade on water surface. For example, ethanol utilization in US in 2005 reduced the CO2 equivalent gas emissions by around 8 million ton.

The research report gives an detailed analysis of the US biofuel market and covers the issues and facts that are critical to the market success of biodiesel:

   - Past performance of Biodiesel and Ethanol in US
   - Various government support programs that are supporting Biofuel growth
