Bioinformatics, as an interdisciplinary field of science, combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering, to analyze and interpret the information associated with biomolecules on a large-scale. It has a central role in many areas of biological research, including genomics, proteomics, cheminformatics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, molecular phylogenetics etc. The research & development being carried out in all these fields has created a huge commercial market for bioinformatics worldwide, with new technological advancements taking place at every step.

According to our report, Global Bioinformatics Market Outlook 2022, research is being dynamically conducted in multiple areas of drug discovery, genome sequencing, etc., supported by government funding or under corporate research programs. Significant milestones in bioinformatics, most notably in genomic sequencing have been achieved by major technological advancements taking place since the last few years. In terms of cost and speed, technological developments have reduced both the time taken to sequence codes and the cost. Presently, technologies allow sequencing of a whole human genome in a few days. Moreover, rapid advances in high-throughput technologies, such as microarrays, mass spectrometry and new/next-generation sequencing, can monitor quantitatively the presence or activity of thousands of genes, RNAs, proteins, metabolites, and compounds in a given biological state.

Apart from the massive research work being carried out, leading players in the global platform are also continuously investing towards introducing new technologies in the market. For instance, Affymetrix recently expanded its portfolio of Axiom Genotyping Arrays for agrigenomics with new offerings for Porcine and Equine Studies. These new arrays contain content for genomic breeding in soybean and cotton, and arrays for buffalo, rainbow trout, rose, and strawberry. More recently, Agilent Technologies Inc. and 10x Genomics entered into a collaboration for the development of a groundbreaking exome allowing in-depth discovery of important novel content within and around the exome by enabling phasing, access to previously unmappable loci, structural variation, and copy number detection. Moreover, scientists are developing new tools to study and analyze the impact that innovative Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) may have on bioinformatics and biomedical research. Thus, the resultant innovations are about to change the face of bioinformatics in times to come.
