Pharmaceutical Firms will adopt Backward Districts in India

Jan 05, 2007

Indian pharmaceutical companies may soon adopt the backward districts in the country. The companies plan to create drug banks and cater to the healthcare needs of the populace living in such areas.

Department of chemicals and petrochemicals, as part of the first-ever public private endeavor of this type, is working out a plan for BPL (Below Poverty Line) families. A pilot project beginning on 26 January 2007 will envisage the manufacture of about 600 drug banks. The project will include two to three districts from each state that is a part of this program.

Underlining that the scheme will need three way cooperation amongst the state governments, makers of drugs, and central govt., a senior officer said, “Although the state and this dept will offer a one time funding of INR 15 lakh as seed money to a drug bank in each of the district, the pharmaceutical firm (that will adopt that specific district) will also bring in a similar amount. The amount can be either in the form of drugs or in cash.

Drug banks, which will be set up on the lines of medicare societies inside Rajasthan’s district hospitals, will procure drugs from foster pharmaceutical firms and sell it at 50% discount to district population at large and for free to the families living below poverty line.

Another important component of the adoption strategy involves a pharmaceutical firm conducting minimum six free medical camps per year in its adopted district, with the overheads being taken care of by the company and the state govt. pitching in by way of medical staff.
