Nanotechnology for Rapid Detection of HIV and Other Viruses

Dec 05, 2006

Nanotechnology is the latest tool used by the scientist in U.S. for diagnosing viruses of the disease as fatal as HIV or as common as influenza. Researchers from the University of Georgia have devised a diagnostic test, which will save both time and lives of people suffering from fatal diseases. Since, this test will enable quick detection of natural outbreak of diseases or bio-terrorism attack.

As per Ralph Tripp, who’s the Lead author with the university’s veterinary medicine college, the new technique measures frequency changes of a near infrared laser as viral RNA or DNA is scattered by it. The frequency changes are as discrete as fingerprints of each individual. While this phenomenon is an established one, previous endeavor of using spectroscopy to detect viruses failed due to the inherent weakness of the signal produced.

However Yiping Zhao - physics professor with the University of Georgia and Richard Dluhy - chemistry Professor with the University of Georgia have discovered a way of significant amplification of the signal via nanorods. The factors of enhancement are extraordinary and what’s good about this is the fabrication methodology, which is cheap and reproducible, and simple to implement.

As per a Research Analyst’s view at RNCOS, who has recently researched a report on “The World Nanotechnology Market (2006)”, “The rapid development of nanotechnology over the years has provided researchers with tools to build highly responsive virus detectors. With increasing threats of outbreak of disease among the populace, and attacks through biological weapons, there’s an urgent need for further development in Nanotechnology.”
