A MoU or the Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the AAPI (American Association of Physicians of Indian origin) and CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). The Memorandum is expected to help improve health sector in rural parts.

Pursuant of CII, AAPI, and MoU will be bolstering their co-operation via introducing new concepts such as “Healthy Village pilot project”.

"We are running pilot projects in one village in each district of Andhra Pradesh and Bihar to address diabetes, heart disease, deafness in children and carcinoma of the cervix and prostrate", AAPI president S. Balasubramaniam revealed while addressing the working session on health at ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’. The session was held in Delhi on 7 January 2007.

"Once the 15-month project is over, we will submit a detailed report on how the model can be extended to rural areas throughout the country", he further added.

While speaking in this session Sayeda Hameed – member of the Planning Commission –conveyed, "While India has made significant advances in life-expectancy, maternal mortality and eradication of some diseases, in indicators such as infant mortality, malnutrition and others, the country lags behind even other developing nations.”

Discussing about the healthcare sector in India, industry experts at RNCOS said, “Just about 27% of the total population in India lives in urban areas, whereas a considerable 73% of the population dwells in rural parts of the country. Conversely, 72% specialist physicians practice in urban regions, and just 25% carry out their practice in semi-urban areas and the rural areas are left with a mere 3% of doctors. Due to this asymmetrical distribution, 80% medical facilities are concentrated in urban parts of the country while a mere 20% are available in rural areas. Thus, rural India is still deprived of proper medical facilities.”

RNCOS – a leading market research and analysis firm – has come up with its latest report on “Opportunities in Indian Healthcare Sector”, which covers the following issues and facts:

 - The emerging trends in the Healthcare sector in India.
 - The Challenges faced by the industry.
 - Pinpoint sectors of growth and identify the driving factors.
 - Challenges and opportunities that exist in this sector.
