India: A Potential Market for Semiconductor Industry

Apr 10, 2007

For years, India has remained a hub for the R&D and design of semiconductor. The country is now emerging as a vast market concerning the consumption of the same.
The states in this country are vying to clinch the maximum investment from the semiconductor industry. Interestingly enough, the two most common states namely Kerala and West Bengal and even Tamil Nadu were virtually at war with one another so that they could attract the manufacturers of semiconductors at the twentieth International Conference on VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design & embedded system. The conference was recently held at Bangalore.
Biswadip Mitra, Managing Director with the Texas Instruments India and the president of India’s VLSI Society said, "India has always been a great R&D site for semiconductor design. However the increase in local consumption of electronic equipment has changed the equation now. This is a once in a generation opportunity for the semiconductor industry in the country, which is growing rapidly". This news appeared in Business Standard on November 27, 2006.
“Keeping this in mind, the VLSI Society of India is aggressively focusing on bringing the academia and the industry closer through a series of seminars, workshops and symposium to create 10,000 VLSI professionals by 2010,” Biswadip Mitra added.
While the contribution of VLSI at present is just 8% to exports out of Chennai, the percentage should improve in the years to come, hopes C Umashankar, MD for ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu).
As per the RNCOS report “Semiconductor Industry (2007-2010)”, “Owing to the growing demand, Asia-Pacific market outperformed global average semiconductor industry in 2005-2006. Demand for products making use of semiconductor, for example consumer electronics and computers in India and China, has been one of the key factors driving the growth of semiconductor industry in this region.”
This research report on “Semiconductor Industry (2007-2010)” provides extensive research and objective analysis of the Semiconductor Market. It also addresses some interesting issues for today’s global business environment. The issues and facts analyzed in this report include: trends in Global Semiconductor Market with respect to market value, segmentation, Capital Spending, Major Companies, future prospects etc, opportunities and challenges associated with the market and so on.
