Nanotechnology Blows Therapeutic Innovations in Gene Therapy

According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, Global Gene Therapy Market Outlook 2018”, nanotechnology is being increasingly incorporated in gene therapy to make gene transfer easier. Recently scientists at the University of Tokyo have built a nanocarrier being capable of light-mediated gene delivery into a solid cancerous tumor. The nanocarrier comprised of polyplex micelle - a self-assembling structure with three distinct layers. The micelle comprises a pDNA core, followed by an intermediary layer of dendrimeric photosensitizer (DPc), and finally an outer hydrophilic layer of poly (ethylene glycol) which forms a shield to protect the package during passage through the body.
 
Nanotechnology products such as nano-robots or nano-diamonds are small enough to enter the body and even used to redesign genome. Nanotechnology in gene therapy would be applied to replace the currently used viral vectors with the potentially less immunogenic nano-size gene carriers. Several non-viral vectors have been designed with the help of nano-particles. Hence, the delivery of repaired genes or the replacement of incorrect genes will be easily accomplished in the near future with the help of nanotechnology. Nanoparticles are being targeted against solid tumors without harming other cells or tissues.
