US Wind Industry crosses 10,000 MW Milestone

With more than 10,000 megawatts of wind energy installations for power generation in the U.S., enough electricity is produced per day to light up more than 2.5 Million homes in the country. One megawatt of wind energy produces enough to light up approximately 300 homes on average, announced AWEA on August 14, 2006.

New power supplies, which work for the economy, energy security, and environment of the country, are provided by wind energy. With its present performance, wind energy is fast emerging as a critical component of the country’s power portfolio, said Randall Swisher, Executive Director of AWEA.

The Remarkable increase in wind energy is mainly driven by the concerns over the volatility of fuel price and its supply, and demand for the popular source of energy. The opportune renewal of PTC (Production Tax Credit) made it possible further, a federal incentive pulled out in the Energy Policy Act signed last year (2005) by President Bush.

Earlier, credit was allowed to perish thrice in 7 years and it was this ambiguity, which discouraged investment in wind turbine manufacturing in U.S. AWEA is now demanding a continuing extension of PTC prior to it's scheduled termination at the year-end 2007, so that further “on again off again” cycles can be avoided and long-term investment encouraged in the country.

Global Wind Energy Market (2006)” the recent market research report published by RNCOS provides extensive research and objective analysis on Global wind energy Industry. According to the report, “Year 2005 was a record breaking year for the U.S. wind energy industry, installing about 2,500 megawatts or worth over US $3 Billion of new power generating equipments in 22 states. Also, year 2006 is likely to add approximately 3000 megawatts of installed capacity in the country.”
