Medical Tourism to Take Thai Tourism Industry to New Heights

The leading market research consulting services company RNCOS has recently released its comprehensive report “Opportunities in Thailand Tourism Industry (2007-2009)" to present a rational analysis of the Thai tourism industry. As per the report, the tourist arrival in Thailand is anticipated to increase at a CAGR of nearly 8% from 2007 to 2011.
Thailand tourism industry holds immense potential for providing impetus to the growth of related industries like hospitality, aviation, transportation etc; as a result, an increasing number of global hospitality chains are planning to increase their presence in Thailand making it a medical hub for patients from the United States, Europe, the Middle East and adjoining countries.
The report says that medical tourism in Thailand is experiencing rapid growth, recording an average of over a million annual tourist arrivals. Because of these force, during the period 2002-2006, the flow of medical tourists has increased at a CAGR of nearly 16%.
Cost advantage in healthcare services with no compromise in the quality is another reason why Thailand is a preferred destination for medical treatment. Patients in Thailand are offered an absolute vocational package including treatment and rejuvenation, besides experienced and internationally trained doctors, enhanced medical technology, and holistic treatments due to which, revenue is anticipated to increase further in the coming years.
The study identifies that growth of the medical tourism in Thailand will be driven by areas like cardiac surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, tropical and infectious diseases, dentistry, and pharmacology in which Thailand has achieved international repute.
Strong marketing campaigns, rising personal disposable income, suitable geographical location and a wide range of natural and cultural heritage attractions are likely to further boost the growth of medical tourism industry.
However, the tourism industry needs to overcome several challenges like rising fuel prices, unpredictable geographical climate, and violence in the far South that has created negative impact abroad and inevitably taken its toll on the travel and tourism.
