China Steel Exports Surge due to Domestic Overcapacity

Export of steel & steel products, in China, rose by around 40 percent to reach almost 27Mn tons, whereas import of the same slid nearly by 12 percent to approximately reach 27Mn tons in the previous year (2005). The increase and decrease in China’s steel exports and imports, respectively, were mainly caused by redundant production and excess capacity of the China steel industry.
However, in spite of the continuous overcapacity and over production of steel due to domestic supply largely outpacing demand, China is not likely to stop importing some sorts of steel soon. The reason behind the continuous imports is that China needs value-added high-end steel & steel products to meet the demands of China Steel Regional Markets.
Though the overproduction of steel in China resulted in surge in the export of the same and in turn earned huge revenues for the country, it’s raising concern among the authorities.
