ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers, who come together voluntarily to give coordinated high quality care to their Medicare patients. ACOs, although having the same principles and objectives, can be broken down into different categories based on the number and leadership structure of parties involved in the ACO, the services provided directly by the ACO, and the services provided through contracted entities. The federal government is banking on ACOs to move Medicare away from the current fee-for-service payment system, which relies on volumes of services, and toward a system that is focused on providing patients quality care at reduced cost.

According to our report, US ACO IT Spending Outlook 2020, the US ACO market is witnessing a tremendous growthdriven by growing acceptance, rising government support and introduction of new ACO models. The emergence of new models will help in providing payors and provider groups better rewards and also in increasing the number of beneficiaries benefitting from ACOs. In 2015, following the announcement of new ACOs, the total number of lives in public and private ACOs has risen to around 29 Million, while the number is projected to reach around 76 Million by the end of 2020 as the number of ACOs in the country increases.

Recently, building upon experience from the Pioneer ACO Model and the Medicare Shared Savings Program(MSSP), CMS intoduced the Next Generation ACO Model. The Next Generation ACO Model offers a new opportunity in accountable care—one that sets predictable financial targets, enables providers and beneficiaries greater opportunities to coordinate care, and aims to attain the highest quality standards of care. The modelis an initiative for ACOs that are experienced in coordinating care for populations of patients. Similarily, the Comprehensive ESRD Care Model was launched to identify, test, and evaluate new ways to improve care for Medicare beneficiaries with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).Through the Comprehensive ESRD Care Model, CMS plans to partner with health care providers and suppliers to test the effectiveness of a new payment and service delivery model in providing beneficiaries with patient-centered, high-quality care. Thus, the US ACOs exhibit a bright future aheadand it is anticipated to cover a huge share of population under its program owing to its various advantages over traditional processes.
