Mobile Phones Don a New Role of AIDS Fighters!

At the 3GSM World Congress, Barcelona, it was proclaimed that the mobile phones would be used to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic prevalent in the continent.

A public-private alliance between the US government and 5-member groups from the mobile phone industry has taken an initiative called ‘Phone for Health’ for this purpose.

‘Phone for Health’ is actually a $10 Million scheme with aim to use cell phone coverage to fortify the health systems in ten African nations. Firms working on this noble project include the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Motorola, the GSM Association, Voxiva, and Accenture.

Rob Conway, Chief Executive, GSM Association, said on February 20, 2007 in a statement reported by E-HEALTH INSIDER, “Rapid and accurate communications channels are crucial to tackling the many health problems faced by African countries and other parts of the developing world”.

“The roll out of this health management software in Africa will clearly demonstrate how governments can exploit the expanding mobile infrastructure to enhance the well-being of their citizens.”

The scheme expedites the real time collection of data from healthcare staff and field workers and holds structured two-way intercommunication to enhance supervision and feedback.

Paul Meyer, Chairman, Voxiva, says, “Health workers will also be able to use the system to order medicine, send alerts, download treatment guidelines, training materials and access other appropriate information”.

The current and future landscape of mobile phone coverage in Africa supports the implementation of ‘Phones for Health’. Currently, over 60% of African population lives in regions under mobile phone coverage. This is projected to climb to 85% by 2010 making it viable for the scheme to use mobile phones to send information to the computer systems of the authorities directly allowing for fast interferences for those at risk, whenever necessary.

The RNCOS report “African Mobile Handset Market Analysis (2006-2009)” says Africa is the world’s fastest developing mobile market. The mobile subscribers in Africa are estimated to grow at a CAGR of around 22.05% during the period 2005-2010 leading to a huge mobile subscriber base of more than 310 Million.

The research report gives a detailed analysis of regional markets in African region with future forecasts and key players operating in the market. Apart from this, it also provides an in-depth analysis of the worldwide mobile market by technology completed with statistical data.
