India - A Fast Emerging Global Refiner

Mar 05, 2007

Share |
India will soon emerge as a global refiner. This is quite apparent by the unveiling of six deals in the making over the period of January 15, 2007 to January 22, 2007. Increased number of global players are eyeing stake in the country and the domestic players are being invited abroad for setting up refineries.

While global firms are seeking share in the rapidly growing refinery sector of India, domestic players are making their way in to countries such as Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Yemen. The Indian companies are being invited for picking up stake in the existing refineries and for setting up green field units.

Investments required to set-up the refineries in the country is pretty lower compared with most countries. Construction costs are competitive due to the availability of the low cost labor in this country. Logistically, India is well placed for refineries since it’s a key market for petroleum products and crude oil. Also, since it is in close vicinity of major demand centers like China.

As per the RNCOS report “Indian Oil & Gas Industry: An Industry Analysis”, Oil comprised about 36% of primary energy consumption during the year 2005.
