India is one of the major consumers of wine in the Asian region. However, owing to the marginal domestic production of wine in the country, India imports major proportion of wine from other countries. According to the Department of Commerce, India imported wine worth INR 1.6 Billion in 2017-18 and worth INR 759.8 Million in 2018 (Apr-Aug). The major exporters of wine to India include France, Australia, Italy, United States, United Kingdom, Chile and South Africa.

Italy is one of the biggest wine producers globally, followed by Spain and France. Among European countries, Indian consumers prefer Italian and French wines due to the superior taste. Also, in 2017, the French wines accounted for the one-fifth of the total wine import, in value terms.  In addition, Italian wines consist of more than 2,000 grape varieties.
