In India, e-governance initiatives have evolved over a period of years through various projects launched by the center, and state governments. Amongst, successful projects include computerization of railway reservation, digitization of land records in Karnataka - Bhoomi project, electronic payment of pensions and subsidies, digitization of passport seva kendra, Aadhaar-based Direct Benefit Transfer, and many others.

The core of good governance is about reduction of internal complexities in the functioning of the government, expediting procedures and bringing about a high degree of transparency, leveraged on new age technologies which will galvanise quick action, as citizens expect.

Government is exploring avenues for enhancing India’s role through ICT for good governance. For instance, in recent times there has been a huge push to ease of doing business, which has revealed that the best practices suggested by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, nowadays rest on e-governance and ICT. Government departments have also shifted focus from buying software or hardware to procuring services and solutions. This approach has led to Service Level Agreements (SLAS) getting defined, thus bringing in greater accountability and transparency of the desired outcome. Then, the infrastructure that has been created is in itself commendable, given the sheer scale. This shared infrastructure (SWAN, SDC, CSCS, UID) created under NeGP has indeed set the foundation for the next generation innovation.

Emphasizing on the potential of this industry, Shushmul Maheshwari, CEO – RNCOS said that, “In order to achieve the desired goal of ‘Minimum Government and Maximum Governance’, I see an increasingly important role for E-Governance. It is one of the most positive applications of technology that has the potential to transform governance and service delivery. But, the potential of E-Governance can be achieved only when there is increased ICT awareness. In the near future, we will need to embrace E-Governance in every way possible. Therefore, we need to increase the use of technology within citizen-government interface to completely eliminate avenues for any kind of malafide discretion or corruption.
