Agribiotech is one of the fastest growing sectors in the biotechnology market. And India, the world’s second largest food producer after China, offers a big market for biotechnology products. The Indian agribiotech industry closed at INR 14.08 Billion (US$ 357.4 Million) in 2007-08, says our newly released report, “Booming Biotech Market in India”.

As per the report, BT cotton - the only GM crop grown at commercial level in India currently - has pushed the overall bioagriculture sector. Therefore, the business of BT cotton seeds alone accounted for nearly 86% of the total bioagriculture revenue in the fiscal 2006-07. Moreover, the Indian agribiotech industry is expected to continue to show strong growth at a CAGR of 45% by 2012-13 on the back of increasing sales of BT cotton seeds and approval of other agribio products in future.

Meanwhile, a number of transgenic plants of various food crops, such as rice, brassica, moonbean, pigeon pea, tomato and vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower etc, are under field trial and are expected to be grown commercially in coming years, says the RNCOS report. With the launch of other transgenic crops for the commercial production, the bioagriculture market in India will grow significantly, with these crops representing substantial market share.
