Cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing from both the ears. The implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin. Hearing through a cochlear implant is different from normal hearing and takes time to learn or relearn. However, it allows many people to recognize warning signals, understand other sounds in the environment, and enjoy a conversation in person or by telephone. Medical device companies like Cochlear Ltd., MED-EL, etc. and universities all across the world are developing cochlear implants with the latest technology.

According to new report by RNCOS, named, “Global Hearing Implants Market Outlook 2020”, there is an intense competition in the market. To overcome this competition, the players strive to develop and launch new and technologically advanced products. In this regard, in September 2016, Cochlear Linited, the leading player in the market, launched Cochlear Nucleus Profile Implant with Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532). The new Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532) is the thinnest full-length perimodiolar electrode available for cochlear implants and comes on the Nucleus Profile implant.

Moreover, in November 2015, Advanced Bionics, a subsidiary of Sonova, received CE mark approval for its next-generation Naida CI Q90 sound processor This sound processor can automatically filter out noise and help patients focus on specific sounds by way of its Ultrazoom technology and AutoSound OS. This technology enables patients to comprehend speech in a noisy setting.

Similarly, cochlear implant with latest technology is Nucleus 6 which has been manufactured by Cochlear Ltd was launched in the market. This implant system is powered by a new custom-designed micro-chip which is five times more powerful than the chip in Nucleus 5. This implant system also has SmartSound iQ, integrated hybrid mode and wireless connectivity. All these features have made it highly desirable for people with hearing loss.
