According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, Global Telemedicine Market Outlook 2022, State governments across the US is driving the way in telemedicine expansion.

The North American market for telemedicine is expected to reach US$ 43 Billion by 2022. This can be attributed to the rising government support, rising aging population in the US, high prevalence of severe metabolic diseases and companies growing interest towards telemedicine approach.

The US is the most established market for telemedicine in North America. In the US, telemedicine has proved to be an effective strategy for monitoring and managing some of the most prevalent chronic conditions prevailing today, including Diabetes and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The Government and market players, particularly across US, have taken a step forward to support benefits of telehealth/telemedicine services via proposed Medicare and Medicaid programs. According to a study carried out by the Center for Connected Health Policy, more than 200 pieces of telemedicine-related legislation were introduced in 42 states during the 2015 legislative session.

As of now, 29 states and the District of Columbia have sanctioned laws regarding health plans covering telemedicine services, ensuring some level of commercial insurance coverage for telemedicine. Moreover, in 2016, it is expected that more bills supporting health insurance coverage for telemedicine-based services will be introduced in various state legislatures. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is also planning for expansion of Medicare coverage for telemedicine. Simultaneously, introducing a bill through the US House of Representatives, this would pay doctors/physicians for delivering telemedicine services to Medicare beneficiaries in any region.
