According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled,South Korea Proton Therapy Outlook 2020”, South Korea has become the most important medical tourism destination in Asia, as it has the necessary healthcare infrastructure. In terms of sophisticated medical equipments, South Korea is the only country after China that provides proton therapy in the developing nations in Asia. With currently 1 center present since 2007, and another one in the opening, South Korea is moving towards achieving greater technological advances.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea, a total of 211,218 people from 191 countries around the world received treatment at medical institutions in South Korea, in 2013. There are a number of factors that can be attributed to the ever increasing medical tourism in South Korea, which include –:

 - Excellent medical technology by international standards
 - Relatively reasonable medical expenses
 - Presence and use of highly sophisticated medical equipment
 - Excellent medical staff
 - Various therapy programs

South Korea’s government has announced plans to further encourage medical tourism, including a help centre providing legal support to foreign patients unhappy with their treatment, and relaxed visa requirements for medical tourists. Moreover, the government of South Korea also invited DOTmed News and other media outlets and organizations, across the worldwide to Seoul to create awareness about the proton therapy center within Korea's National Cancer Center (NCC). Such initiatives are likely to propel the medical tourism and in turn the proton therapy market in the country.

South Korea is promoting itself as a radiation vacation destination, so as to attract medical tourists for cancer treatment. For countries like US, where the cost of treatment is more expensive as compared to South Korea, it might prove to be an alternate option for many patients, especially those patients, facing challenges with reimbursements.
