According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, “Indian Processed Chicken Market Outlook 2022”, the processed chicken has gained huge popularity in past couple of years due to its attractive health benefits for packed food and increasing health consciousness. The major growth drivers of the industry are Increasing affordability, rising urbanization, entry of new players and high demand for chicken products.

Ready-to-Serve chicken product is a relatively new concept in India. Citizens of India are familiar with vegetarian ready-to-serve foods, and the major player in the vegetarian market is Haldiram’s. However, ready-to-serve chicken products are not very popular among Indians due to less variety as well as limited players in this segment. Majority of the non-vegetarian population prefers to have frozen chicken products, such as chicken nuggets, wings, popcorn, etc.
But with the growing awareness and demand for processed chicken products, more and more existing as well as new players are introducing new ready-to-serve chicken products. Also, the government is supporting the development of ready-to-serve chicken market due to its huge market potential. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) is providing assistance to establish modern abattoirs, and modernize existing abattoirs through a program entitled: “Modernization of Abattoirs”. MFPI's program on Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure provides assistance to create integrated cold chain and preservation infrastructure facilities. It covers pre-cooling facilities at production sites, refer vans, mobile cooling units, as well as value addition centres.

The Centre and States have planned to step up veterinary research in creating new broiler varieties, so that there is gene pool diversity and less reliance on a handful of US companies. This acts a huge opportunity for prospective players and investors to invest in a diversified poultry industry and especially ready to serve chicken products, where both large units and community-based efforts co-exist to cater to a diversified consumer base.

Additionally, the National Meat and Poultry Processing Board plays a greater role to educate consumers about the possible health hazards of chicken bought from a wet market, as well as to accelerate the pace of the transition. Transition from a live-bird market to a processed broiler’s meat product market is an important factor in the future expansion of broilers production. Expansion of the poultry industry could create potential trade and investment opportunities. Additionally, India permits 100% foreign direct investment in the food processing sector, which allows multinationals to enter into the Indian broiler’s processing meat market.
