Qatar Empowering Electricity Demand in Middle East

The power sector in the Middle East has proved its potentials in previous years, and is further projected to grow strongly.  The region remains one of the strongest markets in the power industry. According to Middle East Power Sector Analysis”, a research report by RNCOS, Qatar posted record growth in power demand in 2010 among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and by 2015, Doha's growing demand for power is set to increase by 10.8%. Qatar generates the majority of its electricity from natural gas, and its power consumption is forecast to almost double by 2014-end from 2009.

In the Middle East, a number of transmissions, power generation, and distribution projects are planned or underway. The investment in power and water desalination projects is expected to increase in the near future in the region. However, some hurdles still exist which may affect the industry’s exponential growth trajectory in the years to come. The minimal price regime for residential sector in various countries has boosted the electricity consumption in the past few years, but the governments may decrease subsidies in near future that would require residential segment to pay increased economic tariffs. This can hurt the electricity demand in the residential segment, and may reverse the rate of growth in household electricity consumption.

The report analyzes the Middle East power industry, mainly focusing on potential regional markets. It not only provides country level statistics, but also studies electricity installed capacity and consumption trends. A separate GCC grid interconnection analysis along with country-level renewable developments facilitates an all-round market understanding. The research also identifies key players in the market, and includes their detailed business profiles and recent developments. The comprehensive study aims at presenting an unbiased picture of the industry to clients.
