Preference for Home-Made Products Decreasing Cosmetics Penetration in South India

The branded cosmetics products have gained high momentum in India backed by increasing purchasing power, changing consumption habits and greater awareness about the products among consumers. Though, the demand for the products is rising across India, it is dissimilar in different regions. According to the new report by RNCOS, Indian Cosmetic Market Outlook 2018”, the southern region is occupying a lesser share in the overall cosmetics market backed by a specific consumption trend or habit followed by the residents since past many years.

The people across southern region rely more on home-made cosmetics as they believe that natural products do not have side-effects and are comparatively more effective. Also, the abundance of coconut trees and medicinal plants, like chembarathi flower, which are few of the common ingredients used for preparing hair oils is used by people to prepare the cosmetic products either at homes or at local mills. This trend in the region has limited the scope for branded cosmetics especially in the rural and semi-urban regions. In recent years, promotional practices by the cosmetic companies have started luring the younger generation which is increasing penetration of products like creams and lotions in the market. Moreover, with the launch of herbal cosmetic range of shampoos etc., urban people have started opting for the product as these are natural and hence suit their demands. As a result, the share of southern region in total cosmetics market, though comparatively lesser, is expected to gain momentum in the years to come.
