The Indian power sector is characterized by a shortage of power supply. Northern region remains the most potential area for installed power with maximum shortfalls followed by Southern region. This provides an opportunity to bridge demand-supply gap in the Indian power sector. According to our research report Indian Power Sector Analysisinstalled power capacity is projected to add more than 45,000 MW by 2013-14. The addition will be insufficient for the growing Indian economy. Rising investment into infrastructure and speed of urbanization will increase demand for power in some states.

We have found that the demand driven power sector will boost private investment especially merchant power plants. In addition, renewable power will remain a favorite investment avenue as more than 80% renewable power is generated by private players. According to our analysis, certain forms of renewable energy sources such as wind energy and solar have huge potential to fulfill India’s power need with clean energy generation. It will also help to comply with environmental obligations. However, coal will remain the main source for power in the coming years.

The report also states that with the total wind power capacity around 10,950 MW till January 2010, India has more than 48.5 GW wind power potential. Besides, we have studied state wise government initiatives and policy structure for renewable sources. States with the highest potential for investment in the power sector have been analyzed thoroughly. According to our report, nuclear power has huge potential which may boost up in the years to come with international cooperation.
