Online/Mobile App Diet Meals Delivery Services: An Upcoming Trend

Nov 23, 2015

Share |
According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, “US Diet Food Delivery Industry Outlook 2020”, the preference of people is shifting from phone ordering towards online and mobile app ordering. This shift in the preference can be attributed to convenience of online payment offered by this type of ordering. Furthermore, online and mobile app ordering minimizes the risk of placing incorrect order due to miscommunication as almost no human interaction is required.

Online food delivery ordering is about to cannibalize the phone ordering in the US. Approximately five years ago, phone food ordering contributed nearly 70% of the market; however, the trend is drastically changing now. In the year ended May 2013, approximately 59% food delivery orders were placed through phone while 41% orders were placed through internet in the US. However, in 2014 and 2015, the percent of telephonic orders decreased to 56% and 53% respectively, depicting a rising preference of customers toward online/mobile app ordering.

The mobile app and online diet food delivery market is likely to prove to be one of the hottest areas as well as one of the emerging markets as they are growing rapidly across the US. Various players including multiple brand name companies are trying to capture a piece of the rapidly growing demand.  Nutrisystem, Inc. is one such company which provides the convenience of both online and mobile app ordering to its customers. Moreover, Blue Apron also provides the facility of mobile app ordering along with online mode of ordering. Other diet food delivery giants such as Jenny Craig, Medifast, Inc, Chefs Diet, HMR Weight Management Services, Fresh Diet, The South Beach Diet, and Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating amongst others also provide the facility of online food ordering. The rising number of players providing the option of online/mobile app ordering indicates that in coming years, internet orders will surpass the number of orders placed through phones.
