According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, “India Commercial Fishfeed Market Outlook 2022”, the commercial fishfeed has gained huge popularity in past couple of years due to its attractive health benefits for fish and rapid production. The major growth drivers of the industry are strong government support, introduction of modern feed techniques and high demand for fish products.

Nanotechnology is a promising technology spanning many areas of science and technological applications. Nanotechnology in fish feed industry will help in maintaining water quality, good growth of fish with more nutrient values, and eliminating pesticides contents. Although the application of nanotechnology is at nascent stage, it has the potential to solve many of the problems related to fisheries, like fish health, production, reproduction, prevention and treatment of diseases.

Traditionally, feeding of fish was done by providing fish with food in the form of food pellet. This pellet is mainly formulated, based on the daily nutritional fish necessities for components such as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, etc. The idea behind use of nanotechnology is that, nano particles as ingredients will enhance fish feeds by increasing the ratio of fish food nutrients passing across the gut tissue and into the fish, rather than passing directly through the unused fish digestive system.

For instance- Sturgeon and Carp experts have found that adding iron nano particles in the diet would boost the growth of Sturgeon and Carp by 30% and 24% respectively and addition of other mineral nutrients to the fish diet may impact fish’s growth as well as fish’s growth.

At present, research is ongoing in application of metal and metal oxide nano particles for controlling of bacterial bio film, fungal infection and algae blooms for immunomodulation as feed additives, growth of antimicrobial, anti-algae and antifouling coating for water remediation, enrichment of micronutrient content of fish fillets and to improve color of fish. Nanotechnology applications in the fish processing industry can also be utilized for detecting fish bacteria in packaging, producing stronger flavors, colour quality, and safety by increasing the protection properties.
