India’s LPG Import Volumes Set to Remain Robust

Nov 20, 2009

India represents one of the fastest growing LPG markets in the world. The cost-effective and environment-friendly nature of LPG is rapidly making it a favorable fuel alternative in industrial as well as non-industrial sector. In FY 2009, there were close to 107 Million customers and around 9,370 distributors present in the country.

The country has shown impressive growth trends in LPG consumption, well above its regional counterparts, due to various strategic factors thoroughly analyzed in the recent industry analysis "Indian Natural Gas Sector Analysis" from RNCOS. The trend is expected to continue driving country's LPG imports during FY 2010 - FY 2013 at a CAGR of around 10%.

Aggressive marketing strategies adopted by oil marketing companies and enormous government subsidies have been spotted as the major driving factors for the surging consumption of LPG in India. These factors are anticipated to sustain the consumption pattern in industrial as well as non-industrial sectors in future also. In fact, LPG consumption has been dominated by the household segment, mainly in the form of clean cooking gas.

As per our research, the production of LPG from natural gas is quite low in India as compared to global average. However, as the demand for LPG is anticipated to remain high during the forecast period, large amount of natural gas will be required. But the available domestic natural gas reserves will not be able to match the demand projections, resulting in increased LNG imports as compared to crude oil imports. One of the major reasons of this phenomenon highlighted by the report is the lower prices of LNG in the international market as compared to crude oil.

Our report, "Indian Natural Gas Sector Analysis", provides extensive information and rational analysis on the Indian natural gas market and emerging trends in the industry. It gives a deep insight of the LPG, LNG and CNG market of the country. It also facilitates the deep understanding of fast emerging industry segments such as Coal Bed Methane, Gas Hydrates, Underground Coal Gasification, etc. Analysis and statistics regarding market size, growth, segmentation, and trends in technology developments have been thoroughly analyzed in the report to provide clients a comprehensive overview of the market while considering the impact of global economic crisis on the industry.
