Future Remains Bright For Global Thin Film Solar PV Market

Jul 31, 2009

Traditionally, the shortage of polysilicon raw material which is used in the solar PV systems had been a major hindrance in the growth of PV industry worldwide. This has offered a great opportunity for the PV Thin Film industry to grow and establish Thin Film as a major PV technology solution. Thin film PV technology offers an attractive tradeoff for those PV manufacturers who are willing to forego high efficiencies in favor of low-cost and improved availability of raw materials.

According to our latest research, "Global Photovoltaic Market Forecast to 2013", the share of thin film in total PV production has witnessed significant increase in the recent past. While thin film share represented less than 5% of the total PV production capacity in 2005, the share is anticipated to increase to over 3 GW in 2009. Production of thin film solar cells is further forecasted to grow at a CAGR of more than 30% through 2013. Various factors which will drive the growth of this industry segment have been covered in this research report.

"Unlike the traditional solar cells, thin-film solar cell manufacturing doesn't get affected by the lack of raw materials, such as polysilicon. Moreover, there is a factor called 'low-cost' associated with it", says a Sr. Analyst at RNCOS. Therefore, it attracted more attentions. Thin film solar cells are produced in a scalable and continuous manufacturing process, which has the potential to offer further operational savings to manufacturers. Thin-film solar cells, thus, have the potential to allow the PV industry to reach system installation prices of US$1/Watt, at which the produced power cost becomes competitive with conventional sources of electricity.

Our report, "Global Photovoltaic Market Forecast to 2013" provides extensive research and rational analysis of the growing marketplace for PV industry at global as well country level. It contains detailed data on cumulative PV capacity, annual installed PV capacity, and the future market potential on various key countries. It will help clients to understand the driving forces of the PV industry alongwith the detailed future opportunities and analyze the leading-edge opportunities critical to the success of this industry.
