Emerging Economies Offering Opportunities for Sleep Apnea Devices

With a large pool of undiagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients, present around emerging markets like India and China, prove to be the lucrative markets to invest. According to a survey by All India Institute of Medical Sciences, around 9.3% of the adult population in urban and metro areas in India suffers from sleep apnea. Furthermore, according to the Sleep Diagnosis and Therapy Journal, about 2% to 4% of the Chinese population suffers from sleep disordered breathing, including snoring, sleep apnea, and upper airway resistance syndrome.
 
According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled, “Global Sleep Apnea Market Outlook 2020”, citing the potential of sleep apnea therapeutic devices in developing economies major players are investing in this market. In this regard, Taiwan’s Apex Medical Corp is foraying into India to tap the growing healthcare market and plans to initially invest Rs. 100 Crore to market “quality and affordable” equipment to hospitals and nursing homes. The company plans to launch its products through Apex Medical India in the field of respiratory therapy, such as asthma and sleep apnea. Moreover, Philips has been consistently working towards raising awareness of sleep disorders and providing sleep-related solutions in India through a holistic approach. As part of this drive, Philips has assisted hospitals and clinics across the country in establishing more than 250 sleep labs touching 300,000 lives in last 3 years. The company also introduced the first certificate training program for physicians under the banner of Indian Sleep Disorder Association.
 
Similarly, ResMed, the global leader in Sleep Apnea, has recently acquired Curative Medical in July 2015, a privately held leading provider of non-invasive ventilation and sleep-disordered breathing medical devices and accessories in China. Curative Medical is a leading China-based innovator, designer, and manufacturer of medical devices for sleep-disordered breathing and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and has leveraged its expertise in China to drive its growth in other global markets.
 
Consequently, there is a large pool of patients that is still undiagnosed. This majority of undiagnosed patients, act as a key driver for the growth of the sleep apnea market.
