As per the latest research report Emerging Indian NIPT Market”, published by RNCOS, India NIPT market is labelled to worth US$ 400 Million market, brimming with opportunities waiting to be explored.  One of the major syndromes tested via NIPT is Down’s Syndrome. With rise in age of mother, there also increases her risk of having a baby suffering from Down’s syndrome. Women at 30 years of age have a 1:940 chance of having a baby with Down’s syndrome while this risk rises to as high as one in every 85 births for women ageing 40 years.

In India, around 16% live births fall in the high-risk group for Down’s syndrome. Another 16% live births have a risk of 1:1,000-1:500 for having Down’s syndrome, making India a country with a high number of women in need for tests that could alert them about the 21 chromosome triploidy status of the fetus, ultimately leading to a better prepared and informed response for delivery of a child with Down’s syndrome.

Holistically, the report offers a stark depiction of macro-economic factors and healthcare infrastructure relevant in context to NIPT. Our study reveals that in India NIPT will be eagerly adopted by the booming IVF clinics who are witnessing a huge spurge in fertility tourism. Also, India is a home of rapidly expanding network of pathology labs. In order to differentiate themselves from competition, organized players in the Indian diagnostic services market are looking forward for adopting new tests like NIPT.

The report also includes the findings from RNCOS survey “Gynaecologists survey to assess the potential for NIPT in India”. The survey was done between September-December 2013 with around 100 leading gynaecologists in India. The key findings reveal that currently the awareness level for NIPT is very low in India. But when made aware about the benefits of NIPT, all gynaecologists agreed that if launched tactfully, such a technology has a tremendous scope to revolutionize the prenatal diagnosis scenario in India.
