3G has become the major attraction of the Indian telecom sector since the Indian government finalized the policy for issuing spectrum for 3G telecom services in the country.
According to our research report “Indian Telecom Analysis (2008-2012)”, 3G service revenue in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 130% during the fiscal 2010-2013. The growth will be fueled by attractive applications and content development e.g. e-governance, tele-medicine, e-education, multimedia services including movie downloads, video streaming, mobile TV, etc.
Our team of industry analysts have found that 3G has a bright future in India. It is expected that 3G subscribers will pay around five times the current 2/2.5G tariffs. Besides, 3G handsets and data modems are expected to be available at high cost. Thus, service providers will target only niche demographics, but the situation will change in the next three-four years. With high number of subscribers and better operational efficiencies, the prices will drop in coming years to attract a wider audience. 3G subscriber base is expected to account for around 7% of the overall wireless user base by 2013-14.
We have also found that the Indian WiMAX market is one of the most vital markets for international equipment vendors. Our research says that growth in demand for WiMAX is expected to reach more than 14.5 Million subscribers by 2013. Some leading operators like Bharti Airtel, TATA, Reliance Communications (RCom) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (along with Soma Networks) have started providing WiMax services in the country. With huge opportunities in this segment, India can become one of the largest WiMAX markets in the world.
