The sales of mobile broadband dongle in the UK witnessed tremendous growth during September 2008 on account of festive season, attractive offers and benefits over home broadband.
GfK Group recently said that the sales of mobile broadband dongles in the UK are rising though the country has been gripped by the global financial crisis, as reported by TechWatch.
The sales of mobile broadband dongles (USB Modem) rose to 149,000 in September 2008 from 55,000 at the beginning of the current year (January 2008). However, the latest figures (149,000) are lesser than figures recorded during July 2008 (163,000). Nearly 76% mobile broadband users in the country are using contract system, while remaining 24% users avail pay as you go system.
Moreover, the mobile broadband and laptop packages contributed above 27% of the total sales against 4% in July 2008, indicating that it will surpass the stand-alone mobile broadband sales by the end of the current year.
The rapid growth in the uptake of mobile broadband services in the UK is primarily accredited to coming festive season, attractive discounts and lucrative offers by the service providers. In one of the offers, service providers are giving free laptop with mobile broadband packages. Thus, these attractive offers are supporting growth in the mobile broadband industry in the UK.
Moreover, the mobile broadband has an edge over home broadband connection as it gives freedom of surfing anywhere. Consequently, people are increasingly switching over to mobile broadband from home broadband connections. Another important factor which has significantly raised the demand for dongle is increased visibility at high street stores. Some people are of opinion that using mobile broadband is better option than saving money.
The sales of mobile broadband dongles are expected to increase in future as some leading operators like 3 and T-Mobile have recently introduced new packages at an attractive price range with lesser constraints. Thus, these packages will raise the number of mobile broadband connections.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “With increasing popularity of mobile broadband services in the UK, the number of landline connections will come down, resulting in reduction of bills as people don’t have to give line rentals. Moreover, the UK telecom industry will benefit from the rising subscription of mobile broadband services.”
