2008 is proving to be a good season for the tourism sector of Turkey, thanks to the rising number of tourist arrivals and the development of transportation and infrastructure.
According to the Security Directorate’s data, despite the worldwide economic crisis and the increase in dollar value, the Turkish tourism industry, one of the foundation stones of the country, enjoyed a healthy growth in 2008, as per the news published by todayszaman.
Turkey lured 21.5 Million visitors during January-September 2008, recording an increase of 13% from the same period in 2007. Accounting for 16% of the total tourist arrivals, Germany managed to be the leading contributor to the tourism industry of the country during the first nine months of 2008, followed by the Russian Federation and the UK.
Antalya’s beach resorts, the perfect destinations for sun and sea, are attracting the visitors and thus, proving to be the major factors supporting the Turkish tourism industry. Antalya is regarded as the tourism capital of Turkey.
Although Antalya is leading with improved infrastructure to promote the tourism sector, Istanbul remains to be a special place among the tourists. Istanbul, possessing unique history and location, serves as a significant art and culture center. It is leading the race of cities to be selected as European capital of Culture for 2010. And as far as the admirers of Istanbul are concerned, they are hoping that the number of tourists visiting the city would outshine the total number of tourist arrivals to Antalya.
The Turkish government is focusing on the development of the existing transportation system and solving the problems related to infrastructure and transportation, particularly in the rapidly developing tourism hubs.
Further, Turkey is looking forward to register a significant increase in its list of tourist-luring cities by eradicating the probable problematic issues and diversifying its traditional tourism. Moreover, the tourism sector is likely to realize a growth despite the adverse circumstances stemmed from the economic meltdown.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Tourism, one of the crucial factors in the Turkish economy, is playing a key role in developing global relations. With the tourism becoming a way of life, tourists are not just seeking relaxation and enjoyment while traveling, they are also becoming increasingly keen to know about the culture and history of the nations they are visiting.”
