Mobile Broadband Industry Expects to Cross 53.5 Million Next Year

Dec 24, 2008

The number of HSPA users in Asia is expected to double from the current number by November 2009 as it offers access to information on mobile devices 24x7.

GSM Association (GSMA), a telecom industry group, has recently forecasted that the number of HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) users in Asia will grow more than double of its current figure next year, as reported by
asiaonebusiness. HSPA gives access to broadband on mobile phones and other computing devises.

The number of users is expected to soar to 53.5 Million by November 2009 from the present figure of 26.5 Million. The Association revealed in August 2008 that the total number of HSPA users worldwide crossed 50 Million from a mere 11 Million in the same month previous year. Moreover, the Asian region accounts for 46% of the total 197 HSPA commercial deployments across 92 countries.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are increasingly adopting mobile broadband than larger enterprises, the main reason for growth in the industry. Besides, with rising trend of accessing web on laptops and PCs, the adoption of mobile broadband services has surged because it facilities in accessing data anytime and anywhere.

While the large businesses’ IT departments and deep pockets are not pitching in for mobile broadband, SMBs have shown great inclination to implement it because distribution favoritism has no place. For instance, a small business owner can easily buy mobile broadband services and devices from electronic and commercial retail outlets.

Furthermore, the introduction of mobile broadband has had an impact on social and economic structure of emerging countries such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia, and developed countries like Australia, South Korea and Japan. Singapore is believed to stay at the forefront of this trend.

Other reasons that popularize the adoption of mobile broadband services include rising demand from both consumers and enterprises along with declining prices of the services. Further, this trend is likely to be seen in other parts of the world such as the US and Europe.

According to a Research Analyst at
RNCOS, “The deployment and demand of mobile broadband services will not slow down despite the global economic slowdown as access to information has becomes more critical for both individual consumer and enterprises so that they can take the right decision at the right time. Performance and ubiquity of mobile broadband will further push the demand for mobile services.”
