Indian Tourism Sector to rebound in 2010

Dec 11, 2009
Tourism industry of India is expected to rebound in 2010 as government has made several initiatives to promote India on world tourism arena.

The government of India expects its tourism sector to rebound in 2010, as per the news published by gulf news.

In 2008, India received 5.37 Million international tourists, an increase of 5.6%, leading to a 14.4% increase in foreign exchange earnings, which touched Rs 507.3 Billion.

However, Mumbai attacks and the global financial downturn have immensely affected the number of tourists visiting India this year. There was a 7% decline in international arrivals between January and October 2009, as compared to the arrivals during the same period last year. Nevertheless, country’s foreign exchange earnings recorded an increase of 4.1% during the period, indicating a shift in tourists’ spending patterns.

According to the tourism minister, several initiatives and upcoming events like the World Commonwealth Games in Delhi will support this rebound. Further, for these games, which are likely to attract 100,000 people, around 30,000 new hotel rooms are being constructed. The World Common Wealth Games in 2010 will take place between October 3 and 14 (2010).

To attract more and more tourists, numerous initiatives have been made, including stressing on niche markets such as the rural tourism. The government of India identified around 150 sites which are considered to be promoted as destinations to discover India’s cuisines and art and craft. It has been said that UN Development Council will provide financial assistance to 30 of these identified sites.

Another initiative being promoted is the medical and wellness tourism. Ayurverda, part of ancient mode of health and healing in India, is increasingly popular and people can avail state-of-the-art medical services at a much lower cost in India than in the West. Further, the government aims to promote India as a destination for conferences, meetings and events.

According to a RNCOS market research report “Indian Tourism Industry Analysis”, by providing private healthcare facilities to visitors, India has been promoting medical tourism. By 2012, the total medical tourism market is expected to reach US$ 2 Billion.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Such a revival of tourists’ arrival in India will not only flourish the tourism sector but will open doors for related industries such as hospitality, aviation, transportation, etc.”
