Emerging Nations & Smartphones Fast Dialing Growth in Mobile Market

Dec 24, 2008

The global mobile phone sales revenue is predicted to grow at 6.8% during 2007-2013 because of increasing mobile subscriptions in emerging countries and adoption of smartphone in developed countries.

Mobile phone sales revenue is expected to surge 6.8% during 2007-2013 to over $200 Billion by the end of 2003, said Informa Telecoms & Media, business intelligence provider to global telecoms and media, as reported by
netimperative.

Emerging markets, including BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and Africa, will account for the major share of around 60% of the global handset market by the end of 2013. However, the mobile phone sales revenue is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 2% in Western Europe, below 0.5% in Japan and 1% in North America, from 2010 to 2013. Moreover, the value of global smartphone market is anticipated to be 47% of the overall mobile market by 2013, with sales rising from $39 Billion in 2007 to over $95 Billion by 2013.

High prospective growth in the global mobile sales revenue is credited to boom in mobile subscriptions, particularly in emerging markets like China and India. Both the countries witnessed a record increase of more than 50 Million in new subscriptions in the last six months (May-October 2008). Apart from China and India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam and Brazil too saw robust growth in the expansion of mobile services.

Moreover, the value of global mobile phone market is likely to rise on account of increasing sales of smartphones that will see double-digit annual growth in coming years. Non-smartphone segment is believed to see zero growth in annual value as mobile users in developed countries are aggressively switching over to smartphones. But with the rollout of 3G and 3.5G services in emerging countries such as India and China, the trend of low growth in non-smartphone sales will reverse; thus, global mobile phone industry will grow rapidly.

According to a Research Analyst at
RNCOS, “The global mobile handset market is growing at a rapid pace in the backdrop of growth in emerging markets. This reflects starting of a new era wherein the industry is focusing on product differentiation though software integration instead of hardware. Thus, vendors who have changed their strategies according to the radical transformation in the industry will get more benefits than those who still rely on the product differentiation though hardware.”
