Global PC Sales Jumped 15%, Coming Months to Remain Slow

Nov 01, 2008

Global PC sector has recorded a 15% boost in the sales during July to September 2008. It is attributed to the considerable growth in mobile PC sales on account of low cost.

According to the latest survey conducted by Gartner, global PC shipments touched the mark of 80.6 Million Units during the period spanning from July to August 2008, registering a 15% rise over the same period in 2007, as reported by
InternetNews.

As far as regional sales are concerned, the US experienced an increase of 4.6% in the third quarter of 2008 as compared to 2007. Overall, 17.4 Million PCs were purchased by consumers during this period. Europe, Middle East and Africa recorded a 25.9% growth during the current year’s third quarter as compared to the third quarter 2007.

Further, the PC shipment in Asia-Pacific and Latin America grew 13.3% and 13.2% respectively. Laptop PCs accounted for about 28% of total shipments that is again a hike from 21% recorded in July-September 2007.

The major factor that has led to this phenomenal growth in the worldwide PC sales is the significant growth in sales of mobile PCs. The declining average selling cost of mobile PCs is luring the customers and their sales are going up consequently. Approximately 20% year-over-year rise in the shipments of mobile PCs is expected in the following three quarters. Also, an average 2% quarterly decline in the prices of these PCs is very likely over the coming four quarters.

The mini-notebook sector also grew immensely in the worldwide PC market and these notebooks have gained huge popularity due to their reasonable price and also due to penetration of the latest PCs in emerging markets.

However, coming few months are not expected to witness any drastic growth in the PC sector due to the ongoing global economic crisis and soaring inflation rate. The growth will probably remain modest in the following festive season.

According to a Senior Research Analyst at
RNCOS, “Like almost all other major industries, PC sector is also affected by financial crunch and sluggish economy of the world. The present financial problem will present a big challenge and may probably lead to a decline in PC industry in the subsequent months.”
