UK Exhibit Strongest Growth in Western European PC Market

Sep 19, 2008

Gartner has revealed that there has been 22.9% increase in Western European PC sales in the second quarter of 2008, with UK performing exceptionally well.

As per Gartner, Western Europe received about 13.8 Million PC units in Q2 of 2008 (April-June 2008), a rise of 22.9% in contrast to the same period last year (April-June 2007), as reported by Verivox.

European mobile PC sales, which comprised 64% of the overall PC shipments, added to the by posting a rise of 45% in Q2 of 2008. Britain with 2.8 Million PC shipments in Q2 of 2008 was the strongest growing PC industry in Western Europe, exhibiting a 27.4% rise in contrast to the same period in 2007.

The main reason for the increase in Western European PC sales is the sudden slump in average selling rates of PCs. The falling prices of computers have helped in providing a wider choice to customers, thereby boosting the overall growth of the Western European PC market.

Besides, the European PC market was also impelled by robust mobile PC deals. The impressive success story of the laptop sector owing to the user-friendliness of the device has increased its popularity, thus tremendously affecting its sales. Moreover, within the European PC sector,
the UK in particular achieved phenomenal success boasting of a flourishing consumer market. In general, the launch of mini-notebook has boosted the growth of the UK’s PC market.

The European PC market is expected to flourish in future as well. European PC sales will continue to be strong as limited corporate IT expenditure has produced demand because of which a rise in computer replacement process is projected in the professional sector. However, massive price reductions of computers could affect the profit margins of PC manufacturers but it’s surely not going to hit the entire PC industry because there is a huge demand for PCs.

A Research Analyst at RNCOS said, “A conducive business environment in the UK, which performed beyond expectations, is responsible for the growing
PC industry in Western Europe
. The growth of the PC market is also sustaining UK’s semiconductor and chip industry and is promoting the Western European economy in general.”
