Tanzania – Migrating Animal taking Tourism to $1.35 Billion

Sep 09, 2008

Tanzanian tourism industry is expected to generate $1.35 Billion in revenue in 2009 due to aggressive marketing campaigns in various countries and attractive tourist destinations.

According to the Tanzanian Tourist Board, tourism industry in Tanzania is expected to reach about $1.35 Billion in 2009 over the expected $1.2 Billion in 2008, as reported by
reuters.

The Tanzanian Tourist Board revealed that about 719,030 tourists visited Tanzania in 2007, fetching revenue of over $1 Billion. The target for the year 2008 is to receive around 750,000 visitors, while the revenue is anticipated to rise between $1.1 Billion and $1.2 Billion. Nearly 950,000 tourists are expected to visit Tanzania in 2009 and the industry aims at attracting about 1 Million tourists annually by 2010.

This optimistic forecast is the outcome of aggressive marketing in various regions such as Europe and North America as these regions are the main markets for the Tanzanian tourism industry. Many advertisements are being telecasted by Tanzania on TV channels of other countries such as the US to promote its tourism industry. The country is also planning to boost marketing through its diplomatic missions across the globe.

Moreover, Tanzania has a large number of tourist destinations, including national parks and animal reserve centers, to attract tourists. Also, ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’, the highest mountain of Africa, and diving in Zanzibar are the main tourist attractions in the country. Furthermore, another important reason for expected growth in tourist arrivals is the migration of more than a million wildebeest between Tanzania and Kenya that would act as a major draw to attract tourists from across the globe.

The Tanzanian tourism industry has witnessed modest growth in the last few years. Though the tourism industry players are confident of strong growth, the political chaos in the country exposing migrated animals to the danger of poaching, particularly when tourists stay away, is resulting in low revenues.

A Senior Research Analyst at
RNCOS said, “Favorable conditions in Tanzania are leading to a growth in the tourism sector. And the growth is expected to continue in near future too. However, the internal conflicts are posing a serious challenge to the migrated animals. This may affect the overall growth of the country’s tourism industry as the large-scale animal migration is one of the major tourist attractions in the country.”
