The rich history of Syria is a major driver for the country’s tourism industry as it attracts many tourists to the country. Various historical sites, such as castles from the crusaders and relics from the ancient Mesopotamian civilization, are encouraging various tourists from all over the world to visit the country. Also, Aleppo and Damascus have been declared as world heritage sites by the UNESCO and resulting in growth of Syrian tourism industry.
Moreover, tourism industry of the country is labor intensive and creates huge employment opportunities as a large number of tourists spend huge amounts on meals, hotels, transport and other services. Also, as there is no need of expensive technology or skilled labor for growth of tourism industry, this is also fuelling growth into the tourism sector of the country as Syria is not a technically developed country.
Further, excluding some complex processes like operating an airline, investment in tourism sector doesn’t require huge outlay. This is encouraging a large number of investors to invest not only in the country’s tourism sector but also in its economy. Also, presence of basic, but most vital requirements, such as historical sites, friendly people and pleasant climate, in the country are calling people from all over the world.
A Research Analyst at RNCOS said, “The changing climate of Syria is leading to the growth of its tourism sector. Also, various future plans, such as development of tourist spots and special packages for tourists, are going to help in further growth of the Syrian tourism sector. However, effects of changing global economic conditions should be taken care of by the government to maintain growth in the Syrian tourism industry.”
