American Patients Prefer Turkey for Cheaper Healthcare Services

Sep 09, 2009
Yankees have shown more confidence in Turkey for healthcare services than other countries because of its world-class facilities and low cost.

Yankees have discovered Turkey as a favorite medical tourism destination for its low cost and world-class facilities. Gül Soydan, Health Tourism Turkey Coordinator, said that the number of medical tourists from America to Turkey overtook patients from the European countries, as reported by TurkishNY.

People who have become victims of recession that has axed their jobs have discovered Turkey an attractive destination for low cost health services because they are no longer covered by insurance in the US. After the global financial crisis, the US citizens have begun to show great interest in Turkey.

The cost difference between two countries can be inferred from the fact that a complete teeth treatment in the US costs $100,000 while in Turkey it is merely $30,000. Realizing the benefits of treatment, the US Citizens arrivals to Turkey for healthcare services have significantly surged in the first six months of 2009.

Apart from cost factor, another important factor driving American patients to Turkey is long waiting period in the European countries. In fact, majority of the European countries don’t have enough beds to meet patients’ requirements as a result they have to wait for several months to get their surgery done.

Turkey has been enjoying the advantage of meeting high medical standards that work in its favor to attract patients from foreign countries. It is said that Turkey has around 24 hospitals and clinics with Joint Commission International (JCI) status, higher than any other EU country.

Turkish Industrialists' And Businessmen's Association said – the healthcare tourism in Turkey generated revenue of $21.9 Billion last year (2008), and is projected to contribute 36% of its total tourism revenue by the end of 2010.

RNCOS, a leading market research firm, has also said in its report "Emerging Medical Tourism in Turkey" that if Turkey’s potential in the medical tourism industry is efficiently exploited, then it can become an important contributor to the overall country’s economic growth.

A Senior Research Analyst at RNCOS said, “Apart from United States, Netherlands, the Middle East, France, United Kingdom, Belgium are considering Turkey as a low-cost and world-class medical tourism destination. Hospitals gravitating to health tourism believe that 2009 will be much better year than last year.”
