Indian Tourism Industry Recovering

Jul 18, 2009

Indian tourism industry is finally back on the growth track after six long months and the entire credit goes to the rigorous efforts of the tourism ministry.

The data gathered by the tourism ministry of India suggests that the tourist arrivals increased to 3.41 in June 2009 from 3.40 Lakh in June 2008, with forex climbing up to Rs 3,801 Crore from Rs 3,409 Crore during the same period, reported The Times of India.

The previous six months were no less than a nightmare for the Indian tourism industry. During January-June 2009, 24.67 Lakh tourists were recorded by the country, lower than 27.19 Lakh during the corresponding period in 2008. According to officials, flow of overseas travelers to India has dropped 10% since November 2008.

Nevertheless, the growth recorded in June 2009 is mainly attributed to the efforts of the tourism ministry. "Visit India" campaign alongwith some road shows launched by the tourism ministry in several nations made the significant difference. In addition to this, the TV ads broadcasted by the ministry in international markets, under its generic television campaigns have lead to these growth figures for June.

To continue the growth trend and boost the tourist arrivals further, the tourism ministry of India is planning on several new tourism offerings like wellness tourism, domestic tourism and caravan tourism. The ministry has also prioritized the skill upgrade and development in its agenda. The government is planning to introduce one set of program each for the existing workers and the fresh applicants, which will be carried out by the state-owned hospitality centers.

The ministry has targeted to train 5,000 people annually in hospitality and food production. People working at small restaurants and dhabas will be offered 3-day crash course on hygiene and sanitation. These strategies will further boost the tourism industry.

A research report "Indian Tourism Industry Analysis" from RNCOS states that being host of the Commonwealth Games 2010, India is expected to see upsurge in both the domestic and inbound tourism, with nearly 10 Million tourists likely to visit India by 2010.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, "Finally, Indian tourism sector is appearing to make an upturn after having suffered the impacts of 26/11 Mumbai attacks and economic turmoil. The growth of Indian tourism sector will also infuse a new life in various other associated industries like hotel industry, aviation industry and medical tourism industry."
