Zimbabwe Will Broaden Its Market Base

Jun 20, 2007

ZIMBABWE has plans of launching retail shops in money making local and global markets for boosting exports and broadening its market base.

The Industry & International Trade Ministry said that the retail stores, to be launched in the beginning of 2007, would be replacing bonded stores that couldn't fulfill their directive of assisting companies in gaining entry in new markets.

"Zimbabwean goods will be sold and marketed by these shops. We anticipate that the shops will start to operate by the year 2007. With the help of this kind of an organized trade, the country will be allowed to make a way into new markets & augment its export revenues", as per Christian Katsande - Permanent Secretary in the ministry.

On November 2006, Zimbabwe Chinese Business Association - a Chinese business people's alliance in Zimbabwe, pledged that it would support the country in its endeavors for the revival of the economy.

Steve Ke Zhao, secretary general of the association, said that the members are being incited for opening factories along with retail shops for creating more employment opportunities for the locals.

Most businesses in China have been considering partnering with Zimbabwean businesses however locals' response has been skewed more in the direction of the scale's lethargic end. Numerous opportunities exist for serious businesses in Zimbabwe that are on the lookout for growth & expansion in new operational areas.

Zimbabwe, a major tobacco producer earlier, is capable of supplying only one fourth of what's used for providing to Chinese market in the pre 1999 era. Investors in China are now willing to participate in agri production, specifically tobacco farming.

This could be a direct consequence of business' first-impression of Chinese products in Zimbabwean markets. Chinese people want to do business, and for this reason they produce a huge amount of products that match international standards and are being bought & consumed world over.

"Zimbabwean businesses weren't prepared for global market and, therefore, the country's products couldn't find major external markets & earn the estimated foreign currency. If Zimbabwe wants to move to a more balanced, and productive economy, meaningful involvement of local communities is required in this process", as per an analyst at
