Vitamin D Helps Reduce The Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

Jun 25, 2007

People who are taking vitamin D daily may reduce the risk of fatal pancreatic cancer risk to 50%, according to US researchers' report.

According to US researchers' report published on 13th September 2006, people who are taking vitamin D daily may reduce the risk of fatal pancreatic cancer risk to 50% as compared to those who don't. The study implies an easy way to cut the risk of pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most common causes of cancer deaths in US.

As per American Cancer Society estimates, there are 32 thousand new cancer patients likely to be diagnosed, however, only about 5 percent of them will survive 5 years or more. It's because of the lack of any effective program to identify the risk factors for pancreatic cancer.

The study examined 46,771 men and 75,427 women aged between 40-75 and 38-65, respectively, for finding the benefit of vitamin D. According to the study, those who take vitamin D, 400 IU per day, cut the risk of pancreatic cancer by 43 percent. The study also reveals that people taking doses below 150 IU a day had reduced the risk of pancreatic cancer by 22 percent.

The researcher said that consuming above 400 IU per day would not reduce any chance to decrease the risk of cancer further. When sunlight Hits on skin, body usually produce Vitamin D but American people don't get sufficient sunlight to create the desirable amount of vitamin D.

Laboratory results are symptomatic of anti-tumor effect of Vitamin D and the results spot a possible role of Vitamin D to prevent the mortality rate of pancreatic cancer.
