Virginia Granted US $1.5 Million For Training Biotech Workers

Jun 25, 2007

A Virginia based biotech group has received a US $1.5 Million federal grant for designing a program for employees' training for manufacturing plants that are involved in technologies such as biotech etc.

Virginia has six bio remediation firms. The maximum concentration of firms, about 34 percent, is centered in Northern Virginia. Greater Richmond is 2nd with 30 percent; Charlottesville area follows next with 15%; while Western Virginia has 14% & the rest is located in the Hampton Roads.

Virginia Biotechnology Association, the Training & Development Corporation, and Virginia Manufacturers Association will co-lead this program, which is the sole beneficiary in Virginia. The project will also create a new employer authenticated certification system & a new employer designed program to train advanced manufacturing technicians.

"The design team comprising senior officials from advanced manufacturers across the Commonwealth had extended this initiative", said Mark A. Herzog, Virginia Biotechnology Association's executive director. "These general skill standards, licensed by employers, will be the foundation for an innovative training initiative that'll expand the puddle of qualified professionals for bioscience & advanced manufacturing industry."

The project is designed to address a vital problem that the manufacturing sector in Virginia is facing at present. "About 100,000 manufacturing workers are near the age of retirement in Virginia in coming years," said Brett A. Vassey who's the president & CEO in Virginia Manufacturers Association.

Employers are coming across increasing challenges in employing required numbers of skilled candidates for technical manufacturing jobs, which require a strong background in both mathematics and science. It is a necessity for the world class manufacturing to meet this challenge to be able compete in Virginia.
