Researchers in Canada Create Nano devices for Cancer Detection

Jun 26, 2007

Researchers in Canada develop nano devices capable of saving several lives from fatal diseases like cancer.

Devices that cannot be seen even if you have the best microscope but are capable of saving several lives from fatal diseases like cancer are being developed at the McMaster University of Canada. Engineers' team is developing nano-biosensors & imaging systems for detecting cancer when it attacks its very first cell. It's expected that these devices will be available sooner.

McMaster University's engineering researchers will be increasing their efforts for developing these micro & nano-technology based biosensors & imaging devices.

Devices that cannot be seen even if you have the best microscope but are capable of saving several lives from fatal diseases like cancer are being developed at the McMaster University of Canada.

The biosensors & imaging devices will be based on integrating different technologies like DNA, nanowires, polymers, and semiconductors into "smart systems" integrated in small chips. The resultant micro-labs will likely include miniaturized systems for DNA extraction, wireless communications, fluid filtration, cell processing, computing, imaging, and laser & radiation detection systems.

The grant is part of the US$ 10.6 million initiative for expanding the existing nano-fabrication & integration facilities at the university to set up a superlative Micro & Nano Systems Laboratory for developing the miniaturized, inexpensive and comprehensible prototypes for sensing and imaging in environmental and healthcare applications.

"The sensing and imaging technologies that are being pursued will be non-invasive, resulting in removal of risk, expenses, and discomfort related to several screening procedures e.g. colonoscopy", as per Qiyin Fang, assistant professor at McMaster. "It will therefore enable extensive screening for timely disease detection."
