President Urges for PPP in Nigerian Healthcare Industry

Jun 26, 2007

Nigerian president wants the set up of PPP, for healthcare industry  to develop in the country.

Nigeria can't have a meaningful healthcare industry development unless there exists a PPP (Public Private Partnership) agreement in the industry to help the govt. consolidate its efforts. Nigerian president - Olusegun Obsanjo - made these remarks on sidelines of NHC2006 (Nigeria National Health Conference).

The president said that various healthcare industry reforms by govt. like National Health Insurance Scheme & rehabilitation of hospitals are purposeful measures to increase efficiency & accessibility in the system. He urged for PPP structure in the industry to aid govt. efforts to make an enhanced service-oriented healthcare system in Nigeria.

A healthcare industry analyst at
RNCOS said, "In last twenty years, Nigerian healthcare system has seen a major deterioration mainly due to political instability, mismanaged economy & corruption. Majority of the regions lack basic health provisions that has made it hard to setup HIV testing & prevention centers in the country. Moreover, lack of sexual education and stigma & discrimination against HIV/AIDS infected people have further contributed to the epidemic."

Poor healthcare provisions in Nigeria's public healthcare services have encouraged the rise of private medical services in the country. This has resulted in high competition levels in the industry. Profit motive has led to an increase in unethical practices like distribution & importation of adulterated & fake drugs, resulting in drug poising incidences, treatment failures & deaths.

The analyst added, "In Nigeria & other developing nations, sustainable healthcare access can be achieved through PPP, where govt. provides a standard for healthcare services, private sector provides skills & core competencies and donors & businesses take care of funding & other resources. Such arrangements are highly productive in improving healthcare services like polio eradication, child immunization, and HIV/AIDS reduction."
