Malaysia Tops ICT Usage Charts

Jun 25, 2007

Malaysia ranks among top 5 ICT using countries on basis of all ICT aspects like Internet usage, number of IT firms, and e-commerce, said Malaysian ministry of communications.

Malaysia is one of the top nations in terms of ICT (Information Technology & Communications) usage. The Malaysian ministry on December 1, 2006 said that the country isn't far behind in terms of ICT usage, adding that govt. is ensuring progress in all fields.

The ministry highlighted the study carried by Mampu (Malaysian Administrative & Modernization Planning Unit) that ranks Malaysia among top 5 ICT using countries on basis of all ICT aspects like Internet usage, number of IT firms, and e-commerce.

ICT is important in addressing globalization challenges. Shared services & outsourcing industry has given boost to economy & offshore operations have resulted in making more competitive Malaysia, giving credible challenges to India, China & Philippines.

Technology usage has revolutionized sharing, connectedness & collaboration within all communities. Govt. is also increasing efforts to offer ICT facilities & infrastructure to poorer sections of the society.

However, there are major constraints in the development of Malaysian ICT industry. First, the growth of Internet is still slow in the country. Secondly, ICT usage is still very limited in schools as teachers are not skilled enough to integrate technology into teaching process. Also, digital divide is quite prevalent in the country. For instance, in Kuala Lumpur, almost all schools have Internet access, whereas about 1,000 schools outside Kuala Lumpur don't even have access to fixed line telephone services.

An analyst at
RNCOS said, "Emphasis should also be on reducing digital divide along with making a knowledge-based Malaysia. To achieve the goal, strong revisions in teaching & learning processes are required which can help building a creative & positive minded Malaysia. The Malaysian ICT industry is likely to touch US$ 11 Billion by 2007, showing positive signs of growth in the country."
