As per Jupiter Research, despite the success of iTunes, iPod owners are still avoiding to buy songs from iTunes store of Apple. On an average, 20 songs on an iPod are bought from iTunes and considering the enormous storage capacity of iPod models; a mere 5% of songs present on iPod is actually bought from iTunes store.
It is believed that most users of iPod use music that is ripped from audio CDs or simply download the content from P2P clients or illegal websites. Only 17% of iPod users buy at least 1 song from iTunes per month.
The industry had divided portable music player owners in groups of two, one consisting of pirates & other consisting of online buyers. The classification has been rendered as incorrect as online buyers don't buy everything. Websites like Spiral frog has shown the way, music can be distributed free of cost by completely relying on advertisements. Only few people are actually interested in buying music from iTunes store.
"These findings show that the future of online music industry is not bright. With continued growth of music piracy, online music stores need to develop strategic ways to attract people for purchasing music legally", said an analyst at RNCOS.
Apart from this, many users refrain from buying music online because of increasing number of online scams. Also, majority of iPod users consist of youth who don't posses credit cards required for buying music from online stores.
